A LACQUER INCENSE BOX (KOBAKO)
meiji period (late 19th century)
The rectangular three-tiered box with rounded corners, with a removable cover for use as a footed tray, lacquered on the exterior in iroe and gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, gold foil, kirigane and nashiji, the cover with open fans with flowering cherry, the sides with cherry blossoms over a stream, fitted with a tray lacquered in iro-e hiramaki-e and takamaki-e with Chinese boys playing around a drum on a stand on a kinji ground within a nashiji rim, and with two oblong boxes decorated with bags on a kinji ground and with four small rounded rectangular boxes decorated with flowers, ferns and horsetails, set in a nashiji tray with silver handle chased with scrolling foliage, the interior in fine nashiji, with metal gilt and shakudo handles formed as cherry blossoms on the third tier
