The present work belongs to the third of the four groups of Madonna paintings as classified by H. Voss (see Die Malerei der Barock, 1924, p. 517), that of the Mater Dolorosa. The posture and the attitude of the Madonna in this group would seem to have been Sassoferrato's own invention (see De Lpinay, et. al., in the catalogue of the exhibition, Giovan Battista Salvi "Il Sassoferrato", Sassoferrato, 1990, p.127). Within the group itself there are variations according to figure length and posture and, indeed, there are several versions of each (the Uffizi, Florence, Galleria Pallavicini, Rome and the Liechtenstein Gallery, Vienna). The present work is a less common variant in which the Madonna's head rests lightly on her right shoulder rather than her left.
