Lot Essay

Trevisani treated this subject on at least one other occasion. The Ecce Homo in the Schnborn collection, Schloss Weissenstein, Pommersfelden has been dated by Frank R. DeFederico to circa 1708-10 both stylistically and on the basis of correspondence between Franz Georg von Schnborn and his agent in Rome, Gottfried Bessel (F.R. DeFederico, Francesco Trevisani, 1977, p. 50, pl. 33). The present painting which can also be dated like the Pommersfelden Ecce Homo and the Penitent Magdalen (op. cit., p. 49, pl. 31), is a mature work executed in Rome when Trevisani moved there from Venice in 1678.
