Lot Essay

Primarily known as a Swedish photographer, Heilborn was born in St. Petersburg, Russia and first started to take pictures in 1910. When he later moved to Sweden in 1914, he photographed for the Swedish press and in 1923 came to America and trained as an industrial engineer at the GM Institute of Technology. In 1927 he returned to Sweden and found himself increasingly interested in both filmaking and photography. Subsequently, photography became his full-time occupation and in 1932 he received his first major photographic assignment for a Swedish mining company. Established as a leading photographer, he continued working through the next decade and his work was included in several international exhibitions.
