5 parts in one volume, large 2o (537 x 405 mm). Engraved frontispiece by Goyton after Sebastien le Clerc, engraved title-vignettes incorporating the royal arms of Louis XIV, numerous engraved head- and tail-pieces by le Clerc, 8 engraved plates in first part (Blondel's Resolution), engraved and woodcut illustrations in the other parts. Contemporary French red morocco, presentation binding with gilt arms of Louis XIV (Olivier 2494 fer 10) on sides, triple gilt fillet outer border, spine in eight compartments with seven raised bands, gilt-lettered in one compartment, a repeated gilt panel in the rest containing the royal monogram, board edges and turn-ins gilt, edges gilt (spine rubbed, some wear to extremities, some stains and minor abrasions on sides). Provenance: Louis XVI (bound for presentation by the king as patron of the French Royal Academy of Sciences).
This collection of mathematical works contains: the first edition of Nicolas-Franois Blondel (1618-1686), Resolution des quatre principaux problmes d'architecture, with separate title dated 1673; the second edition of Edm Mariotte (d. 1684), Trait de la percussion (colophon dated 1676); Lettres crites par MM. Mariotte, Pecquet et Perrault sur le sujet d'une nouvelle dcouverte touchant la veu (colophon dated 1676); a second edition of Mariotte's Trait du nivellement (colophon dated 1676); and a second edition of Bernard Frenicle de Bessy (ca. 1605-1675), Trait des triangles rectangles en nombres (colophon dated 1677), which includes the second part published here for the first time.
The engraved frontispiece, the first illustration of the meeting of a learned society, shows a meeting of the Academy in the Royal Library at Versailles, with Louis XIV and his minister Colbert present (see also lot 713). Norman 1809.
