4o (214 x 162 mm). 5 engraved folding plates. (Some very minor browning to text and one plate.) Contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt (joints starting, minor wear). Provenance: Comte d'Argenson (autograph letter signed from the author laid-in).
THE DEDICATION COPY of the second edition, WITH AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM D'ALEMBERT TO THE DEDICATEE. This copy with pasted-on slip bearing Jombert imprint (as above) over original "chez David" imprint. The second edition was extensively revised and enlarged by d'Alembert and re-dedicated to the Minister of the State, Le Comte d'Argenson. In his letter (Paris, 18 May 1758, 3 pages, small 4o ), d'Alembert explains his reasons for this and apologizes for doing so without gaining his permission: "Monseigneur M. Le President Henault veut bien vous faire parvenir la nouvelle dition de mon Trait de Dynamique, que j'ai pris la libert de vous ddier. La sincerit et la puret des sentimens qui m'ont dict ces hommage servirons d'excuse l'indiscretion que j'ai commise, de ne point vous le faire agrer avant de le rendre public; mais j'ai craint que votre modestie n'impost silence mon zele, & je voulois laisser agir en libert la reconnoissance et l'attachemens que je vous conserverai toute ma vie..."
