VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of the "only publication of one of the earliest scientific societies" (Garrison-Morton). Active from 1664-72, The Private College of Amsterdam was founded by Gerard Blaes and devoted itself to comparative anatomical and physiological investigations of the lower vertebrates, concentrating primarily on fishes and mammals. It was one of the earliest of the many European scientific societies established during the 17th century. This rare publication contains "the first publication of Swammerdam's early experiments with neuro-muscular physiology. Other portions of the works were probably written by Blaes (Garrison-Morton).
