12o (137 x 77 mm). Double-page etched frontispiece incorporating portrait of the author and various head types. (Some minor worming at some inner margins, affecting a few letters). 17th-century calf (lettering piece worn away). Provenance: "W" (letterpress initial mounted on pastedown).
VERY RARE FIRST EDITION of this curious anonymous diatribe against the altering or enhancing of the natural human form to conform to the dictates of fashion. The subtext on the title-page reads: "Historically Presented, in the mad and cruel Gallantry, Foolish Bravery, ridiculous Beauty, Filthy Finenesse, and loathsome Lovelinesse of most Nations, fashining & altering their Bodies from the Mould intended by Nature." At the end is an appendix entitled, "Exhibiting the Pedigree of the English Gallant." NLM/Krivatsy 1927; Wellcome II, p.270; Wing B-5460 (recording 7 copies, 2 in the U.K.); Norman 372.
