FIRST EDITION of Linnaeus' first detailed catalogue of cultivated plants. Linnaeus prepared this catalogue of the gardens of the wealthy Anglo-Dutch merchant George Clifford during his sojourn in Holland from 1735-38. Clifford had appointed Linnaeus superintendent of his incomparable botanic gardens at the Hartekamp, near Haarlem. Produced at Clifford's expense, the Hortus Cliffortianus contains Linnaeus' concise definitions and elaborate synonyms for the numerous species in Clifford's garden and greenhouse. It is illustrated with beautiful plates, mostly after designs by Georg Ehret and engraved by Jan Wandelaar, and "are among the most lovely among 'plain' ones in any flower book" (Hunt).
