Second edition. Published the same year as the first edition, with no statement of edition on title, but with some textual corrections. Based on letters written from Holland in 1684 to Locke's friend Edward Clarke, M.P. for Taunton, concerning Clarke's children (Locke was himself childless), it was published with the encouragement of Locke's disciple, William Molyneux, a widower with a son. It contains "the seeds of modern developmental psychology" (Norman), dealing both with a child's physical and moral needs, and advocating strictness in both.
