PINEL, Philippe (1745-1826). Autograph letter signed ("Pinel") to "M. Lebeau, docteuer," Paris, 12 May 1819. 3 pages, 4to (250 x 197 mm), offering a detailed clinical opinion in the case of a Madame L. whose symptoms are described, concluding that they do not portend imminent danger, recommending certain infusions and a gentle and nourishing diet (foods listed in detail) to cure her digestive troubles, as well as calming drives in the county: "il sera donc important de faire quelque petit voyages en voiture le matin et le soir..." Autograph letter signed ("Pinel") to an unidentified physician, Paris, 5 May 1813. 4 pages, 4to (247 x 203mm.), detailed diagnosis and recommendation of treatments for a patient whose ailment he classifies as "periodic melancholia," due to sudden bereavement, suggesting camphor and opium during the attacks and suggesting that if these prove unsuccessful, she may need to come to Paris for treatment "dans un tablissement consacr au traitement de l'alination mentale," for which he recommends one of his former students, Dr. J.E.D.
