Half-title, titlepage in red and black with engraved vignette emblem of the Accademia della Crusca, page of errata at end of text, 26 numbered engraved plates, two folding (without the engraved portrait of Redi, found in a few copies, S4 with light stain, minor foxing to some leaves at end). Contemporary vellum, edges stained red, spine lettered longitudinally in an early hand. Provenance: Fabbiano Lambardi, gift of the author, inscribed (probably by Redi) at base of titlepage: "Al Sige Cavalier Fabbiano Lambardi L'Autore," additional inscription (by recipient?) on front free endpage: "Dono di Sig.re Redi Autore al Cav.e Fabbiano Lambardi Can?)"; illegible small circular inkstamp on front pastedown.

FIRST EDITION, A PRESENTATION COPY of Redi's study of parasites, using the microscope. By dissection and collection, Redi identified some 108 endopathic and extopathic parasitic organisms including leeches, worms, snails, slugs, and cephalopods, carefully depicted in the engraved plates.
