Lot Essay

Mrs. Ann Cooke was the first photographer to establish a studio in the English port of Hull, being recorded at the above address from 1845 until 1859. The early frames on these images and the woman's hair in ringlets suggest a date close to the establishment of the studio. It has been suggested that Ann Cooke was the first woman commercial photographer in Britain.
