ARTHUR WELLESLEY, DUKE OF WELLINGTON (1769-1852)
A 3½-page autograph letter, signed ("Wellington"), to Sir John, 8°, Walmer Castle, Oct. 18, 1839 (slightly soiled).
Condemning a man found drunk in charge of a ship: "I perform my duty as Lord Warden of the Cinque ports by dismissing a Man from the Pilots Service proved upon trial to have been drunk on duty ... if I permitted a Man to continue to act as Pilot and to take charge of the lines and properties of her Majesty's subjects in these dangerous seas who had once proved himself to be unworthy of confidence ... I should have omitted to perform my duty to protect the Public".
