Lot Essay

These shawls were manufactured by Frédéric Hébert from 1852. An Exhibition of Art-Industry was held in Paris in 1855 where many shawls were exhibited including those designed by Berrus. See Monique Lévi-Strauss, "The Cashmere Shawl", London, 1987, pp. 48-50.
