A TRAVELING TORAH SCROLL OF SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE
19th century, probably English.
Finely handwritten brown ink on vellum in square Ashkenazic hand, with forty-two lines of text per column, mounted on silver-gilt rollers, the upper rollers with later staves, surmounted by a crown, with silk binder and embroidered fabric mantle, contained in a gilt stamped leather case and original painted tin traveling case, the lid inscribed in gilt letters; 'Sir Moses Montefiore Bart., London'--height of scroll 5.1/8in. (13cm.) outer box 12 x 7 x 5in. (32x19x13cm.) inner box 12 x 6 x 4in. (31x16x12cm.)
