HEBREW MANUSCRIPT - Moses ben Joshua of Narbonne's (d. 1362) commentary on Averroes' Efsharut ha-Devekut ba-Sekhel ha-Po'el (Epistle on the possibility of conjunction with the active intellect) and other works of philosophical content. [Italian], copied by the scribe Elkanah, 1491. 346 pages, brown ink on paper, 259 x 180 mm., usually 29 or 30 lines per page, generally fine condition, with the name of the scribe 'Elkanah' dotted along the right hand margin of p. 106, the colophon on p. 306 dated Heshvan [5]252, written in a semi-cursive Italian hand, headings in a square Italian hand, modern leather, mounted with remnants of early (contemporary?) blind-tooled calf with geometric designs, various notes and scribbles on the flyleaves, with David Solomon Sassoon's bookplate with a record of purchase 'Frankfort o/Main, Iune 7.1907'.
Contents
p. 1: various Hebrew notes and scribbles
p. 2: notes in French and Hebrew, dated 1851 and 1861 respectively
p. 3: various notes and poems of different dates, in Hebrew, Arabic, Cyrillic and Roman hands
p. 4-5: Hebrew notes and poems in a hand contemporary to the manuscript singing its praise as well as that of the author
p. 6-60: Averroes' Sefer Efsharut ha-Devekut ba-Sekhel ha-Po'el (Epistle on the possibility of conjunction with the active intellect), with a commentary by Moses ben Joshua of Narbonne (this tractate was published by Kalman Perry Bland, New York 1982)
p. 61-73: Moses ben Joshua of Narbonne's commentary to an unidentified 'Ma'amar Katon' by Averroes (it could not be established whether this is Narboni's commentary on Averroes' short commentary on Organon (Steinschneider, Hebraische Ubersetzungen, SS 17, 18) or whether it is somehow related to Narboni's commentary on Shi'ur Komah; further specialized research is necessary).
p. 74-306: commentary by Moses ben Joshua of Narboni on Abu Bakr ibn Tufayl's work Hayy ibn Yaqzan, describing the spiritual development of a person who grew up in solitude and finally attains mystical understanding of the Divine, ending with a dated colophon on p. 306.
p. 309-328: philosophical work entitled Happalat ha-Happalah (the incoherence of the incoherence), here ascribed to Abu Chamed Ghazali. The title, however, is the Hebrew translation of an Arabic work by Averroes, entitled 'Tahafut al-Tahafut', which was apparently never commented upon by Narboni. Narboni did write a commentary to Ghazali's Maqasid al-Falasifa (the intentions of the philosophers), which was followed by another work, entitled Tahafut al-Falasifa (the incoherence of the philosophers), to which the aforementioned work by Averroes is a direct reaction.
p. 330-345: Moses ben Barukh ben Samuel ha-Kohen, Sefer Shem ha-Meforash (on the Divine Name), apparently unrecorded.
An important philosophical miscellany, worthy of further research.
