A German jewelled, pearl-set and enamelled gold and silver-gilt Presentation Snuff-Box

Cartouche-shaped box with baluster sides, the cover applied with a red-gold-bordered panel enamelled with translucent green on a wavy guilloché ground, centred by a silver-gilt vase with a flower bouquet set with rose-cut diamonds, opals, pearls and a ruby, surrounded by a silver-gilt portico flanked by baluster columns, and foliate gold c-scrolls, the base engraved with flowers and scrolling foliage on a matted ground, the sides decorated with arch-shaped reserves enamelled in translucent green on a basket-wave guilloché ground with chased flowers and swags framed by opaque white enamel bands, alternating with side pilasters engraved with vases and foliage and enamelled with opaque white and translucent green

Lot Essay

The inside of the cover is engraved: "Presented to Mr. Tattersall. by His Royal Highness, The reigning Duke of Saxe-Cobourg and Gotha Feb.y 1848."
Ernest II (1818-1893), son of Ernest I, Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, succeeded his father to the throne in 1844. He was the elder brother of Albert, Prince Consort of Queen Victoria.
