Lot Essay
The ash drawer-linings of the drum table combined with the heavily reeded shaft and generous paterae indicate a Scottish cabinet-maker. William Trotter, the Edinburgh cabinet-maker based in 9 Princes Street from 1810, is reknowned for his use of floral patera, thick reeding and gadrooned mouldings, however the style of this drum table is not necessarily attributable to him (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pp. 115-122, pls. 51, 54, 55, 56, 60). A similar octagonal drum table, with more discreet reeding on the top, shaft and legs, made by John Thompson, the Durham cabinet-maker who is recorded in Sadler Street between 1802-1819, is illustrated in 'An Anthology of Regional Furniture with Maker's Identification', Regional Furniture, 1993, pl. 55.
