Provenance
Probably supplied to Sir Thomas Gladstone, 2nd Bt. (1804-1889) for Fasque, Kincardinshire.
Thence by descent until sold at Bonham's house sale, 27 September 1997, lots 31-5.

Lot Essay

Of Scottish extraction, the Gladstone's prosperity arose through their successful mercantile ventures in Liverpool. It was, therefore, only natural that they should turn to Messrs. Gillows of Lancaster for the refurnishing of Fasque, Kincardinshire, following the marriage of Sir Thomas Gladstone to Louisa Fellowes in 1835.
Although this exact pattern has not so far been traced in Gillows' Estimate Sketch Books (now held in the City of Westminster Archive Centre), Gillows supplied a related 'Rack for cues & Maces' to 'Cuthbert Esq.' in the 1830s at a cost of '£12.8.9¼'.
