Vase-shaped and on square plinth and fluted spreading foot, the short stem with lobed, beaded and foliage borders, the fluted body chased with acanthus foliage and panels of fruits, flowers and foliage, with two reed fruiting vine handles with acanthus leaf terminal, with egg-and-dart rim, the detachable fluted domed cover with detachable water-lily finial, the body engraved with inscription, marked on body, cover and finial

Lot Essay

The Stewards:

The Hon. Robert Edward Petre (d.1848) of Stapleton Park, co. York was the third son of Robert Edward, 9th Baron Petre (d.1801) by his second wife Juliana (d.1833), daughter of Henry Howard Esq., of Glossop. He married Laura Maria, fourth daughter of George, 8th Baron Stafford (d.1836), in 1829.

Sackville Walter Lane Fox Esq., (d.1874) was the third son of James Lane Fox Esq., (d.1821) of Bramham Park, co, York and his wife Hon. Marcia-Lucy Pitt, daughter of George, 1st Baron Rivers (d.1803). Sackville Fox married Lady Charlotte Osborne, only daughter of George 6th Duke of Leeds (d.1838), in 1826. Their eldest son, also Sackville, became 12th Baron Conyers and 15th Baron Darcy de Knayth on the death of his maternal uncle in 1859.
