A 19th-Century Everest-pattern oxidised and lacquered-brass theodolite,
by TROUGHTON & SIMMS, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, spider's web adjusters, fitted with trough compass with silvered scale and needle clamp, the axis raised on U-shaped support incorporating the two part-vertical circles, with silvered scales, verniers and magnifiers, fine-screw vertical adjustment, the centre pillar mounted on the horizontal plate over the chamfered silvered horizontal circle, with twin verniers and folding magnifiers, bubble level, tangent-screw fine adjustment with clamp, on similarly adjusted tripod mounting with three adjustable screw feet -- 10¼in. (26cm.) high
