Third quarter of the 17th Century
With swamped octagonal barrel cut with eight grooves and with silver sights, the rear one pierced and chased with grotesque masks, plain tang, rounded lock with pierced domed integral wheel-cover engraved with a wreath, the plate chiselled with foliage in low relief and retaining traces of a signature (perhaps 'Lorentz Cassel'), finely chiselled cock, cock-spring, and pan-cover, domed pan-cover release button, moulded figured walnut full stock (bruised, minor worming) carved in relief with a grotesque mask behind the barrel tang and with foliate scrolls behind the rear ramrod-pipe (butt partly replaced, patch-box cover later), iron mounts including side-plate chiselled with marine monsters and pierced and chiselled trigger-guard, turned ramrod-pipes, set trigger (incomplete), iron fore-end cap (loose), and associated iron-mounted ramrod (some wear and pitting throughout)
