THE PORCELAIN CIRCA 1715-20, THE DECORATION CIRCA 1720-25
Painted in Schwarzlot enriched with Sgraffito lines, almost certainly by Ignaz Preissler, the teabowl with a continuous scene of an estuary meeting the sea, the sea littered with galleons, the shore with three figures at discussion, the estuary with figures and trees on one bank, the other bank with a large schloss by a fortified city, the interior with a galleon and ships, the saucer with dilapidated fortifications on an island in an estuary with ships and galleons, the distant shore with further fortifications, the foreground with trees and figures unloading a boat, the cloudy sky with a quartered coat of arms surmounted by two helmets flanked by mantling (teabowl with extensive wear to interior, slight chipping and sanding to footrim, rim slightly ground, minute wear to enamels and slight wear to gilding, saucer with area of wear to arms and one boat, further minute wear)

Lot Essay

The treatment of the trees and mountains on the saucer is similar to a bottle illustrated by R. von Strasser, op. cit (1973), Vol. XV, p. 142, fig. 14, and to a coffee-pot from the Estate of the late Andreina Torre sold by Christie's Geneva on 16th November 1992, lot 202. A saucer from the same service (as the Torre coffee-pot) with a similar scene to the present saucer was sold in these Rooms on 28th March 1977, lot 73 (the lot comprised a pair of teabowls and saucers).
