Lot Essay

In this Chanukkah lamp a reference is made to Prague Jewry, who are symbolised by the Star of David enclosing a Swedish hat. In 1648 the Jews of Prague distinguished themselves in the defence of the city against the invading Swedes. In recognition of their aid the emperor Ferdinand III presented them with a special flag which is still preserved in the Altneuschul. Its design with a Swedish cap in the centre of the Shield of David became the official emblem of the Prague Jewish community
