A FOUR-CASE LACQUER SHEATH INRO

The inro of oval section, the two-section sheath with openwork panels decorated in gold hiramaki-e with hexagonal patterns with flowerheads framing two scenes of the four gentlemanly accomplishments, two Chinese scholars playing a board game while a third watches, and the reverse with a Chinese scholar painting, another holding a scroll, lacquered in gold, silver and iro-e hiramaki-e, okibirame and mother-of-pearl inlay on a kimpun-dusted togidashi ground; interior cases o-hirame; fitted with a lacquer netsuke modelled as a kodansu (incense chest) with a hinged door containing drawers and a coral bead ojime
