Désirée, Queen of Sweden was born in Marseilles in 1777. Désirée's sister Julie (1771-1846) had married Joseph Bonaparte (1768-1844), later King of Naples and Sicily, in 1771. Désirée attracted the attentions of Joseph's brother Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), later Emperor of France, in 1794. Their engagement lasted two years but it was broken off by Napoleon in 1796. She married one of Napoleon's generals, Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (1763-1844) in 1798. Bernadotte was later to be elected as Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810.
