Lot Essay

Tibats hinges are found on a number of distinguished pieces of mid-eighteenth century case and other furniture, particularly concertina-action card-tables, for example one sold in these Rooms, 29 November 1979, lot 96 (see: P. Thornton, 'A Signed Hinge', Furniture History, 1966, pp. 44-45).
The drawer hinges of the bookcase attributed to Thomas Chippendale in the Samuel Messer collection were stamped by Tibats. It was sold from the Messer collection, in these Rooms, 5 December 1991, lot 120.
