A gilt bronze figure of Lama Phawang Pa
Tibet, 15th/16th Century
Seated with his legs angled on a domed circular lotus base, his arms resting on his knees with his hands pointing to the sides, wearing a short dhoti finely incised with rosettes and ring ornaments, with beaded bracelets around his arms and ankles and a necklace with foliate pendant, his face with a stern expression with furrowed brows, flanked by pierced earlobes adorned with a ring and cylindrical ornament, his hair combed back and with strands falling down over his shoulders, the base inscribed with his name and bearing an inscription on the reverse, richly gilt overall

Lot Essay

The inscription may be translated as follows: "Made in Nyugla (gNyug-La), Western Tibet and offered to the Great Assembly of monks. Prostrations to lama Phawang Pa who achieved great knowledge in the path of Tantric teachings and obtained liberation from the physical elements."
