Decorated at the centre with the arms of Saunders, with helmet, crest and iron-red mantling, within gilt spearheads in the well and a grisaille and gilt du Paquier-style border incorporating two cartouches of love-birds, minor underside rim chips

Lot Essay

See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 349. According to Mr. Howard, there were at least three batches of this service, which would explain the minor variations found on pieces; in particular the elephants' heads can vary because of confusion between tarnished silver which can appear black, and rubbed black which can appear grey.
