Signed Hotokusai Kakushu and kao, Edo Period (19th century)
The rectangular tray with canted corners and four bracket feet decorated in gold, silver and black hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi-e, kirigane and nashiji on a polished black lacquer ground with two Kaioke [Shell Box] with shells for the shell game (kai-awase), the boxes decorated with cranes among hills and pine trees and the shells with various birds, the tray with an upturned edge with a design of shippo-hanabishi, the underside nashiji
