A LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO)

The long, rectangular box decorated on the exterior in gold hiramaki-e with plovers flying over waves on a roiro ground, the cresting waves continued on the sides, the rims fundame and the interior of the box nashiji; fitted with a soft-metal mizuire in the form of a rabbit and 'brocade' bag, an oblong inkstone and one brush contained in an ivory case carved to resemble bamboo, applied on each of the long sides with silver cord rings
