A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako) and Matching Table (Bundai) Edo period (19th century) Each decorated in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, kirigane and uchikomi on a nashiji ground with scenes of Sumiyoshi Shrine; the rectangular table set on four silver-mounted bracket feet and designed on the writing surface with the rooftops of the shrine buildings and torii visible through bands of clouds on the far shore of an inlet which is spanned by the high, arched bridge of Sumiyoshi Shrine bridge and surrounded by rocks and pines; the underside of the table nashiji and the mounts silver cast with foliate scroll; the rectangular writing box lacquered with related scenes of cranes wading in and circling above water in a landscape of rocks, pines and persimmons, on the lid, and with thatched salt-kilns surrounded by rocks and pines below an inlaid gilt-silver sun, on the underside of the lid, the lower interior of the box nashiji and containing an inkstone and ink stick, a silver and gilt water dropper cast as a cargo-laden boat on waves, two writing brushes in fundame cases lacquered in low relief with chrysanthemums, and a knife, a paper pricker and inkstick holder, each with silver fittings and in matching cases table 24¼ x 14¼ x 4 7/8in.
