For a detailed discussion of the Lancaster Delftware Pottery see Barbara Blenkinship, ibid., pp. 40-70. See also Emlyn Roberts, 'Lancaster Delftware Kiln', ibid., pp. 71-75 for details of the site.

The present lot is the only inscribed and dated piece of Lancaster delftware known, yet precise details of William Whewell are not recorded. It is interesting to note that a William Whewell (1794-1866), born in Lancaster became an important 19th century scientist, mathematician, philosopher and theologian. Perhaps the present ink-pot was made for one of his forebears.
