The present lot is the only inscribed and dated piece of Lancaster delftware known, yet precise details of William Whewell are not recorded. It is interesting to note that a William Whewell (1794-1866), born in Lancaster became an important 19th century scientist, mathematician, philosopher and theologian. Perhaps the present ink-pot was made for one of his forebears.
