Lot Essay

Jan Nicolaas Derck is recorded working circa 1718-1763 in Hoorn. The former monastry of St. Clara housed the foundry of Derck since 1722.
This mortar was made for Hermanus Stokvelt. Stokvelt is recorded being a student of medicin at Leiden University in 1746. At that time Stokvelt was 25 years of age, later he became an apothecary in Alkmaar.

cf. Dr. D.A. Wittop Koning, Nederlandse vijzels, Weert, 1989, p. 29 and 69. This mortar is mentioned as nr. 33.
