A LOUIS XV TWO-COLOUR GOLD SNUFF-BOX SET WITH A LATER ENGLISH MINIATURE
Paris, 1768, with the charge mark of Jean-Jacques Prevost 1762-1768 and the discharge mark of Julien Alaterre 1768-1774, other marks rubbed, the miniature by Andrew Plimer (1763-1837), circa 1785
Oval box, the four polished gold panels on the sides centred by oval reserves chased with trophies of music and gardening on a matted ground, divided by festooned plasters, the side border of the cover chased in green gold with swags of laurel foliage on a matted ground, the cover later inset with a glazed oval portrait miniature of a young lady in white dress with green ribbon at corsage, long powdered curling hair, the base later inset with a dark marble panel, the matted gold rims chased with stylized acanthus
