A MAGNIFICENT SWEPT-HILT RAPIER WITH CHISELLED & GILT HILT IN THE MANNER OF THE MUNICH SCHOOL
IN GERMAN 16TH CENTURY STYLE
With tapering double-edged blade of flattened hexagonal section, cut on each face with a fuller extending through the oblong ricasso, each fuller with a series of etched marks, the ricasso struck twice on each face with a mark, iron hilt of flattened bars comprising pointed quillon-block, straight quillons each with swelled tip, three concentric side-rings, the upper side-ring linked to the knuckle-guard by a diagonal bar, and downcurved arms, all finely chiselled with scrollwork and foliage inhabited by sea monsters and birds, the upper and middle side-rings respectively with a small vignette depicting a figure of Justice and Leda and the swan, all against a stippled gilt ground, inner-guard of slender rounded bars each retaining some gilt finish, spirally grooved wire-bound grip with narrow Turk's heads, and large ovoidal pommel chiselled and gilt en suite with the guard, the frontal and inner faces each depicting a Classical female figure
