A Meissen group of a shepherd and shepherdess
Circa 1745, blue crossed swords mark
Modelled by J.J. Kändler, the shepherd in a gilt-edged iron-red hat, a gilt-edged and buttoned yellow jacket painted with indianische Blumen, white shirt, blue breeches and black shoes, a dog at his side, the shepherdess leaning against his shoulder and wearing a black bodice, white shirt and apron, a puce skirt painted in black and gilt with flower-sprays and yellow shoes, holding a sheep, both seated on rockwork before a bocage, on an oval base applied with coloured flowers (some restoration to leaves and branches of bocage and top of tree stump, small chips to leaves, chips and overpainting to ends of ribbons of his hat, restoration to bun of her hair, his right little finger, her right hand and fingers, dog's tail and toggle, a section of the back of her apron, two cracks through base one extending through the shepherdess's skirt to the shepherd's shirt, the other a restored crack running up the back of rockwork to bottom of his jacket, small chips to flowers and leaves and minor rubbing to gilding)
