In the Louis XVI Style, Circa 1870
The square-shaped tapering form surmounted by an armillary sphere, the angles outlined with bead moulding, the front inset with a repousseé panel of two bacchantes supporting Cupid standing on a globe, above the circular enamel dial, with pierced gilt latten hands, above a pair of lions with tasselled drapery, the twin-train movement with silk suspension and countwheel strike, the sides each with ribbon-tied and laurel trophies, centred with an oval escutcheon, on a stepped base with turned feet; raised on a rectangular white marble plinth with a post at each angle, linked by chains, on turned feet
The plinth: 13 in. (33 cm.) wide; 9 in. (23 cm.) deep
27¾ in. (70.5 cm.) high

Lot Essay

This clock is a copy of a celebrated 18th century model, examples of which may be found in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, the dial signed Thiery à Paris, and in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. Another example was in the Wildenstein Collection, sold at Sotheby's, Monaco, The Akram Ojjeh Sale, 26 June 1979, lot 17.
