The arms are those of Featherstonhaugh, for Sir Henry Featherstonhaugh 2nd Bt. (1754-1846) of Uppark, co. Sussex. Sir Henry inherited the title and his father's estates at the age of 19, having been educated at Eton College and University College, Oxford. He left England in 1775 to go on the Grand Tour visiting France, Switzerland and Italy. Whilst in Rome he was painted by the leading portait painter of the day, Pompeo Batoni. The portrait is now in the collection of the National Trust and still hangs at Uppark, the Featherstonhaugh's Sussex seat. Sir Henry remained unmarried into his 70's, although he is said to have fathered a child in his teens with Emma Lyon (1765-1815), later Lady Hamilton, in 1781. He finially married at the age of 71. His bride was a 20-year-old dairymaid, Mary-Ann Bullock. Sir Henry made her his heir and on her death she was succeeded in turn by her sister, Frances, who took the family name and lived in the house with her companion, Miss Sutherland, until her death in 1895. She willed the house to her friend Col. the Hon. Keith Turnour for life, then to the Hon. Herbert Meade, son of the Earl of Clanwilliam. He and his wife Margaret gave the house to the National Trust in 1954; they were succeeded by their son Richard and his wife. After Richard's death, pieces from the private rooms were sold in 1972. Uppark was devastated by fire in 1989, but later underwent a lengthy and sensitive restoration by the National Trust. (2)
