Each with shaped brèche marble top with moulded edge above a frieze carved with foliate branches, on a shaft with a young shepherdess and a shepherd, with goats, the support modelled as a tree, on a rockwork-carved base with later bun feet, the frieze and marble top later, regilt

Lot Essay

A pair of related giltwood tables with bases carved with male and female rustic figures is in The Saloon at Wrotham Park, Hertfordshire (T. Knox, 'Wrotham Park, Hertfordshire - II', Country Life, 21 February 1990, fig. 1, p. 52). They were recorded in the 1898 insurance valuation of Wrotham when they were described as a 'Pair of pier tables to match [the 'Chippendale' pier glasses] with shaped coloured marble tops'.
