This exquisitely embellished covered cup would most probably have been presented by visiting dignitaries from the Mughal court as tribute to the Qianlong Emperor. These jewel encrusted treasures were well received by Qianlong who subsequently wrote numerous poems in praise of their quality. Compare a small covered bowl and stand from this same group of gem-embellished vessels, sold in these Rooms, 3 November 1998, lot 884.
