A REVERSE-INLAID COVERED BOX
koryo dynasty (13th century)
Round, the surface of the cover flat surrounded by angled sides and the lower section also with angled sides above a flat base, decorated on the cover in reverse-inlaid white slip with a central lotus medallion, the petals of which are outlined in inlaid black slip, within a band of scrolling leaves, the angled shoulder of the cover also reverse-inlaid with a ring of stiff leaves separated by short lines, and with a narrow band of fretwork in white slip which is repeated opposite on the lower section of the box, the box and cover additionally decorated by a bluish-green celadon glaze, crystalline in places and of even high gloss, inner rims unglazed, interior and base glazed celadon, four spur marks on base
