A Scottish George III mahogany longcase clock
James Nicol, Cannongate, circa 1780
The hood with later moulded caddy top surmounted by brass ball and spire finials, replaced satinwood blind fret panels to the front cornice, small glazed side panels, reduced, with inset brass-capped columns to the front, breakarch trunk door, the plain plinth raised on moulded bracket feet, the 12in. wide cut-away brass dial with bird and urn spandrels to a silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring with subsidiary silvered seconds ring and date aperture to the matted centre, blued steel hands, with painted, retouched, and engraved rolling moon to the arch, below the signature James Nicol Cannongate, the dial with feet to steel brackets positioned on the upper movement front plate, the four pillar movement with anchor escapement and rack strike on bell
