Lot Essay

The EU and crown stamps that appear on all four of these candlesticks were used as the inventory stamps on furniture and works of art held at the Chateau d'Eu in the Bresle valley between Normandy and Picardy. The Chateau was built in 1578 after the plans of the Leroy brothers of Beauvais, and was seized during the Revolution when most of its furnishings and paintings were either sold, burned, or mutilated. During the Restoration the Chateau was allocated to the dowager Duchesse d'Orleans, daughter of the Duc de Penthivre, the future Louis-Philippe. A campaign to restore and refurnish the Chateau was begun in 1821.
