Lot Essay

First modelled in 1758 by Falconet, this is a reduction of a marble in the Louvre exhibited at the Salon of 1757. It was produced in three sizes and proved to be one of the most influential and enduring models of the 18th Century. The earliest example of the figures sold for 144 livres each. See E. Bourgeois, Le Biscuit de Sèvres (n.d.), no. 91, and a similar example from the Elizabeth Parke Firestone Collection sold, Christie's New York, on 21 March 1991, lot 133 ($9,500).
