CIRCA 1775, GREY INTERLACED LS, PAINTER'S MARKS FOR GERARD AND BOULANGER, INCISED 21/A38 TO CAN AND mc TO SAUCER
Painted with sailors pulling on ropes on a quayside within an oval gilt band cartouche against a broad band of foliage scrolls issuing flowers, the lower part with a band of berried myrtle, the handle with a gilt foliate thumbpiece and pendant gilt husks, the saucer with sailors smoking pipes within a circular cartouche and similar broad border, gilt dentil rims (slight wear to gilt rims and handle of can, very slight wear to well of saucer)

Lot Essay

Claude-Charles Gérard (fils or l'aîne) was a figure painter at Sèvres from 1771 to 1824. Jean-Pierre Boulanger was a gilder and painter at Sèvres from 1754 to 1785.
