Lot Essay

With its paired male and female figures in a pastoral setting filled with animals, this needlework picture is in keeping with a group of Boston schoolgirl needleworks from the mid-eighteenth century. In scale and design, this example recalls an example by Susannah Heath, wrought circa 1774 (see Betty Ring, Girlhood Embriodery (New York, 1993) vol. 1 figure 41).
