A SILK-ON-LINEN NEEDLEWORK SAMPLER
AMERICAN, DATED 1793

Worked in black, cream, green, pink, yellow, slate blue and brown silk threads in several stitches including cross, whip, and satin, in four horizontal registers comprised from top to bottom of a single alphabetical band followed by the motto, "prize exquisite workmanship & be carefully diligent," above the garlanded leaf embellished verse, "Oh Child most dear, incline Thine hear, and hearken to Gods voice, his counsil [sic] take For that will make his Saints for to rejoice/ Be not Like those who Grace oppose and give Their minds to Play. But let your mind be Well inclined in Seeking wisdom's way" over an open field embellished with a central stylized urn with flowers flanked by hanging flower baskets, birds, flowering bushes and dogs above a wrought identifying band inscribed, "Hannah Street's Work 1793," all enclosed by a border of meandering flowers and vines--16¼in. high, 15½in. wide
