KARABAGH DISTRICT, 19TH CENTURY, PROBABLY FIRST HALF
The shaded indigo field arranged with minor geometric motifs, small animals and polychrome octagons containing angular floral sprays around a central column of six alternating ivory and dusty red stepped lozenge medallions containing stepped lozenges issuing angular leaves, in a mid-blue scrolling S-motif and lozenge border between brick-red floral meander stripes, even wear, natural corrosion in the brown, one end rewoven in part of the outer stripe, selvages rebound, scattered areas of localised repiling

Lot Essay

Both the field and border designs of this runner are archaic, taken from 18th century weavings. The border design is a variant of one found on a number of Caucasian dragon carpets, while the field is easiest to compare with embroideries of the eighteenth century. In both cases however the simplification of the design indicates that a 19th century date is more probable.
